He served his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, in surgery, pediatric surgery, medicine and neurology. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
