Two year ago, the bolts holding the motor and fan in my outside air-conditioning unit rusted through and dropped the motor and fan blades into the copper tubing and destroyed the air-conditioner. Since we’d had the unit for 22 years, we knew that it had served it’s purpose and must be replaced. I called Air-Pros Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, and Steve Sears came to our home. He said that he removed the air handler and pvc tubing that provides drainage of water from the attic and outside air-conditioning unit. We had agreed for a unit and installation totaling $3500; however, when he handed the bill to me, it was over $5000. We discussed the discrepancy, and he finally accepted $3700. While we were on vacation this summer, 2016, we were informed that the ceiling in the inside foyer was leaking. We quickly made the 900 mile trip home. When we arrived, there was a 10 square feet section of the ceiling that was water soaked, dripping, drooping, and cracked wide open. I called Air-Pros Air Conditioning and Refrigeration again, and I advised Steve Sears of the situation. He came to our home, said that he had to replace an old piece of plastic pvc tubing in the attic, and blamed me for the leak. I told him that he had supposedly replaced the pvc tubing in the attic already, and I had already paid him for that job. I asked him when he could send someone to make the repairs on the ceiling, and he blamed me for the leak saying that I hadn‘t maintained the pvc tubing. I told him that I had paid for all new pvc tubing and everything else, so it was his shoddy workmanship. My wife and I are 100% medically disabled since 2008 and were unable to climb into the attic to inspect his installation. He presented a bill to me for $100 to replace the old, twenty-four year old pvc tubing that he had supposedly already replaced. I refused to pay a second time for the same job that I had been paid for but hadn’t been done by him. I asked him about repairing the ceiling that was water filled and falling, and he left in a profanity filled departure. I contacted another air-conditioning business, and when they came, they stated on the bill that the pvc tubing in the attic wasn’t replaced and the leak was caused by the air handler being installed incorrectly by Steve Sears and that the air handler in the attic wasn’t level, thus causing the leak and ceiling damage because of an unleveled air handler and drainage mistakes. The repairs have cost me $800 so far, and I still have to get a 4’ X 8’ section of the ceiling removed, replaced with new drywall, re-popcorned, and painted. I still haven’t called to get an estimate for the carpenter and painter work. Therefore, Steve’s shoddy installation of not leveling the air handler correctly and replacing and running the pvc tubing correctly is going to cost me over $1000 in repairs. As soon as I have the ceiling repaired and painted, I plan to sue Steve Sears and Air-Pros Air Conditioning and Refrigeration for improper installation of the air handler and pvc tubing in the attic that caused the leak and possible mold that’s growing in the walls surrounding the leak!
