Founded in 1965, Community Action Southwest is a nonprofit social service agency that focuses on eradication of poverty. It emphasizes on a variety of issues that include identifying local conditions leading to poverty, sensitizing the community to incidence of poverty and mobilizing public and private resources to deal with the causes of poverty. Community Action Southwest operates more than 30 programs serving over 24,000 persons annually in Washington and Greene counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. The various programs operated by the agency include family development, food and nutrition, child development and health, senior citizens care and education. It also operates various clinics and adult education centers. Headquartered in Washington, Pa., it also organizes various fundraising events.
