Amir A. Afkhami, MD, Ph.D. currently serves as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Director of Medical Student Education of the GW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He is also Interim Medical Director of the George Washington University Hospital's psychiatric services. Dr. Afkhami is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and an internationally recognized expert in psychiatry, medical education, and public health policy. He is a sought-after subject matter expert and advised a number of U.S. federal agencies and Congress on major legislations and government-funded domestic and international programs in mental health. He also served his community on local nonprofit boards dedicated to helping people with mental illness, including Woodley House. Dr. Afkhami graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine, completed his internship at Yale New Haven Hospital, and his residency in psychiatry at the Weill Cornell Medical Center. He has received numerous honors from his peers, professional societies, and governments including the APA's Roeske Award for Excellence in Medical Education and the 'Psychiatrist of the Year' award from the Washington Psychiatric Society. His practice encompasses the full-range of general adult psychiatry, including medication treatment and, when appropriate, provides insight-oriented, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavior therapy.
