On September 7th, 2012 I became a first time mom. Since this was our first time being parents and going through the birthing process, my husband, Tristan, and I wanted to do TONS of research. Most of the women in our life gave birth without pain management and I decided that’s what I wanted to do as well. I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to do it, especially in a hospital setting. After watching The Business of Being Born, a wonderful documentary that I would recommend watching if you are considering a home birth or birth at a birthing center, we knew we had to have some extra help. We hired Lin as our doula to consult with us throughout the process. At 36 weeks, the hospital sent us a letter in the mail saying that they were no longer providing obstetrical care after September 3rd at 8:00 AM. Seeing as how my due date was August 30 and I wanted to have an all-natural birth, we panicked. After a few phone calls, we realized the only option that we were comfortable with was giving birth at the birthing center in Tyler, TX with the help of Lin and Dr. Rozenboom. They really were a blessing in disguise. After 27 hours of being in active labor, they remained patient and were determined to get her here safely. If I had not chosen to give birth naturally with people that knew birth wasn't an illness to “fix,” I would've delivered by C-Section caused by failure to progress. I am truly blessed that I had such a wonderful team to help deliver my baby girl.
