Snow Bird Nest campground is a little less formal than the nearby state campground (Gilbert Ray). Beautiful desert setting and there is a gas station, a Dollar Store, a Subway and general market and a few other small stores just down the dirt road. Hot showers in rustic bare wood stalls, which I found fascinating, being from up north where our climate is not so dry! Duke and Sue Bliffert, the owners, are onsite and very helpful and friendly!! The first thing I noticed was the absence of written rules posted around their property, which adds to the natural beauty:) In the morning the various birds get things started, and at night you hear coyotes calling. I spotted prairie dogs (or are they round-tailed squirrels)
among their many tiny tunnels, jack rabbits and road-runners. And civilization is closer than it feels; a 24/7 Walmart Supercenter and Harkins Pavillions 12 movie theater and much more (The Coyote Pause restaurant serves a wonderful indoor/outdoor brunch) are just 7.3 miles away, a spectacular and fun drive through desert hills loaded with saguaro cacti.
