While many companies make general claims about service andquality, Shepherd Hardware Products makes a specific commitment 100 percent shipment of orders in three days and keeps its word. For the approximately 60 million items the company sells in a year, the returned goods rate is less than one-fifth of one percent. Of that fraction, 95 percent are related to broken packages, often at the hands of consumers in the stores. Such performance standards have earned Vendor of the Year awards from retail leaders Home Depot and Ace Hardware. In its latest outward sign of growth, Shepherd Hardware Products has expanded its 117,000-square-foot production facility in Three Oaks, Mich., by 38,400 square feet to provide additional warehousing capacity.
