Our HistoryRed Wing Sand & Gravel was founded by the Dohertys: Walter, Paul and Frank in 1969 to fill the growing need for construction aggregates (stone, sand and gravel) for building roads, homes and materials for its sister company, Package Pavement?s blacktop production. The name ?Red Wing? was born when Frank Doherty, Sr. was looking at property along Route 82 near Uhle?s (now Joe?s) Dairy Bar in Hopewell Junction, NY, many years ago. There were flocks of red-winged blackbirds flying about the site, so the trio thought, why not name the company after this beautiful bird, native to the area. We began mining an 18 acre site across from the Frontier Telephone office which was later donated to the town of East Fishkill in 1974 when the sand and gravel extraction process was completed. The newly created park continues to be a popular swimming area for residents of East Fishkill. (RED WING PARK)Today, Frank Doherty Jr., President of Red Wing Sand & Gravel oversees the company?s two Dutchess County plants located in Billings and Milan. Red Wing Sand & Gravel is dedicated to production of ?in spec? aggregates for the construction industry. By using dredges, conveyors, loaders, trucks, towers, screens, and a scale; we dig, wash, crush, and screen sand and gravel to produce properly sized, clean, usable products. Red Wing is currently the largest supplier of natural washed sand and gravel aggregates in Dutchess County. Red Wing Sand & Gravel has grown to be very active in the communities we serve; along with being a Corporate Sponsor of the fireworks display at the Town of LaGrange Community Day, we also participate at the Town of East Fishkill and Town of Milan Community Days. As part of the revitalization of our community?s natural resources, Red Wing Sand & Gravel has donated over 20,000 evergreen seedlings to the attendees of these events and has planted thousands more in our sites throughout Dutchess and Columbia Counties.
