The Social Security Administration is an independent agency of the United States federal government that administers a social insurance program consisting of retirement, disability and survivors' benefits. The agency operates more than 10 regional offices, over 1,300 field offices and nearly 35 service centers. The Social Security Administration provides monthly benefits to retired and disabled workers, the survivors of insured workers and their spouses and children.
