About Akashi Japanese Restaurant Akashi Japanese Restaurant was established in 1993. The restaurant was started by Larry Chi and wife Barbara. At the time they started, they were the youngest sushi bar in town (average age of chefs was 21). The owners had a previous restaurant in downtown Miami but decided to fill a niche that was needed in, then the small local town of, South Miami, now named the "All-American City". Larry and Barbara have both worked and still continue to work within the restaurant since the very beginning. Meaning of the name, "Akashi" The name "akashi" was decided upon because of its meaning "bright stone"; which Larry and Barbara feel Akashi Japanese Restaurant is- a gem in the sushi community! Another meaning is that it's also a city in Japan which is well known for its seafood, especially their snapper. Akashi Chefs Most of the chefs that started the restaurant were family members which still continue to work at Akashi to this day. All chefs work with the same dedication and enthusiasm as Larry and hold their position to the highest esteem. Throughout the years, the chefs have become an establishment within South Florida, which patrons call the "best kept secret in South Miami". The Future.... With the opening of Akashi Japanese Restaurant in Coconut Grove in Miami in Summer 2008, Akashi will continue to provide sushi of the highest quality to patrons and followers alike in yet another fine community. Akashi has not only been built up by Barbara, Larry and the staff, but they are here today because of the loyal following of their patrons throughout the years which they consider as their own family.

THE BEST SUSHI IN THE MIAMI AREA: plain and simple. Nothing else even comes close to this diverse and delicious sushi restaurant. With an abundance of different styles to choose from, Akashi delivers fast service, and an "at home" feel every time you walk through the door. Here, you can enjoy great food without emptying your wallet. If you're a sushi freak you definitely have to check this place out if you haven't done so already.

Lately not up to par

I've been going here for a few years and the beef tataki here used to be amazingly good, but they've been skimping on portions starting the past year, or it might be another chef with a different style. It's a small restaurant that gets very packed on fridays and saturdays. The food there is great but on the pricy end; it'll be a great place for a date. Really good service there too.

A local favorite of mine

This place always delivers the best sushi around. Very reasonable prices, and wide variety of delicious items. My favorite roll is the "Ebi Ten". Definately worth trying if you've never been.
