Rehab is what you make of it!

The treatment center itself is very cozy and comfortable. Staff is really great as well. It was wonderful for me as I was ready to get sober. Others that were in there with me would complain about things but in my opinion they weren't there for the right reasons. Rehab was a place for me to try and turn my life around. I was able to do that there. I was treated with respect and learned a better understanding of myself. I was able to stay sober and am very grateful for my stay at ABTS. The facility was super clean. The food was great. The beach is right outside the front door. I would recommend this rehab to anyone trying to change their life around. Thanks!!!!

At 'Experimental Kid's Review'

......interesting that you use medical staff's official abbreviation for treatment = tx. VERY interesting!

Its all about the money.

I spen several months at ABTS and it was a wonderful place at first, however the owner is an accoutant. It was full of great staff that really cared and felt like a family. Dave (the owner) ended that. Good staff are fired on a regular basis and that causes issues for clients. I once saw a 18 year old boy kicked out in the pouring rain. I might be stupid but it seems not the most caring way to deal with a addict. There are still some GREAT people that work there and Im sure some are helped. Im just glad Im gone.

Don't waste your time and money!

This place is unorganized and worthless for anyone who really needs help. They do not have anyone in charge. There are two old ladies, Ann and Serenna that kick people out if they don't agree with them or voice their opinion about the problems that never seem to end. Really dumb people work there. I left that facility in worse shape than when I entered and they kept all my money. Find a place that has people with real skills to help you, this is not it!

A grateful addict

When I came to Awakenings, I was scared and uncertain and much to my surprise, I was welcomed and love by all the staff and my peers. I can remember my counselor telling me, "We will love you until you can love yourself, and then we will continue to love you!" Something about that was so comforting and I am forever grateful to the amazing staff and my awesome peers for helping me through the most difficult time in my life.

Hardcore Addict is spot on

Yep, sex in the laundry room...right under their noses. Thanks Awakenings for contributing to the dissolution of two marriages. Way to go, you should be very proud of your program. Well done.

Love This Place

Spending almost 3 months of my life at Awakenings by the Sea was the best decision I have ever made. I've been to rehab twice before and I always felt like I was in a hospital, not a place of healing. The moment I walked in this place, I knew it was the one. The staff was so inviting, helpful and warm. It's as if I had just waked into another world, one with hope, kindness and love, nothing like the scary, dark, dangerous and hateful world I had just walked away from. One of my favorite daily events was the morning beach walk. I was able to start my morning in a place where I felt comfortable and safe. The walk on the beach helped me to become grounded. I was able to go through the rest of my day knowing that everything was going to be ok. I had the GREATEST counselor in the world!! His own life experience and vast knowledge when it came to recovery and how to REALLY live it, may have just saved my life. I've had good counselors in the past but I always felt like they were reading out of a book, and drug addicts don't respond we'll to that sort of thing. My counselor/mentor at Awakenings by the Sea walks the walk. He inspired me to do so many amazingly things while in treatment, and he taught me how to live life outside of the walls of rehab. I don't ever remember laughing so hard in my entire life!! My peers during my stay were some of the best I could have asked for, especially the ones I didn't agree with. When I was confronted with a situation in the house that I didn't know how to handle, I remembered what my counselor told me, "embrace change and discomfort while you are here because when you leave this place you will be confronted with it again. Learn how to live through it while in a safe place and you will have a much better chance of success when faced with confrontation and discomfort on the outside". Thank god for that little bit of information! I didn't always agree with my peers or staff while in treatment, but I used this tactic and realized that I will not always be right, people aren't always out to get me and the only one I can control is me. To anyone looking for treatment, walk through the front doors of this place, and if you feel anything like I did the first time I walked though the doors of Awakenings, then you will know that you have left the darkness behind you and you have entered a place of healing. If I had any recommendations or suggestions it would be to open another Awakenings somewhere, staff it with the same people and save more lives. Thank you for saving mine :-)

Great Staff. Terrible Ownership.

The counselors are amazing and great people to learn from. They all have their own addiction stories to tell and their own recovery to fight for and you can lean on that to help you in your journey. However, the owner (Dave) cuts money where he should not and is more concerned about the bottom dollar than the patients and staff. He is a politician and an accountant more than he is a human. The things I have seen during my months there is enough for me to NOT recommend this facility to another drug addict who is seriously considering recovery. If you are looking to party, get high, and have sex, enjoy because it is like Club Med!Rather than install cameras where they are needed (so patients don't get into trouble), the owner passes the responsibility onto others. The staff and peer leaders can't be everywhere at once Dave! He fires the good staff and then uses low quality characters from staffing agencies who are just there to collect a paycheck as their replacements. He makes promises he does not keep and he talks down to others like they are inferior to him. He preaches Christ-like love and forgiveness but is, in fact, a hypocrite. Matthew 7:21-23. Read it sometime Dave. I love the kitchen staff and techs on duty as well, but unfortunately, I will not promote the continuation of a business where the root of it is sick and needs removed. This means that I must apologize to all the staff there who truly have Christ-like love for their fellowman and who make a living working at Awakenings by the Sea. Sadly, all your efforts will be in vain if the speaker of your house continues to punish and take away the privileges and perks of the patients and staff just to "save a dollar". You claim to be a recovering addict yourself, yet you esteem yourself to greatly and have forgotten humility. The most important attribute necessary for staying sober and loving others. Please be more assiduous in your drive to actually help people and not just turn a profit off of the addiction of someone else.I remain sober to this day but I do not think anyone else from my time does and/or will. That is the nature of the beast, but I just have to ask, how many more could have been saved for good had you just spent the little extra needed to ensure a more secure and safe facility for everyone? This is recovery. We are all vulnerable and weak at first and it was like you took advantage of that weakness while simultaneously abusing the staff under you who made any suggestions or complaints. You are garbage Dave and you will run that company into the ground if you do not learn to back off and let people like your Clinical Director do their job and run things. Stay home and count your money and let the people who know what they are doing make all the decisions. May God have mercy on your soul and may He bless all your wonderful staff who are not there just to collect a paycheck.

Stay Away!

My wife went to this place for alcohol "addiction" and she came home wanting a divorce. I have heard everything from her sneaking out of her room at night, to 3-somes (not my wife) on the back porch, to addicts sneaking in drug paraphernalia, to theft by ABS employees. I'm not saying I'm completely innocent here but my fragile (addict) wife was in an extremely unsupervised environment where she was suppose to go work on getting better and bringing home tools to stay sober and strenthen our marriage. Not so much with this place, reminds me of a frat house. And just for the record most of the people she was in treatment with, including her, have already relapsed. I think it is important for patients to have access to other recovering addicts to place perspective on things. Professional and trained therapists should be running the organization. This place is completely run by former addicts...not sure this is a good combination.

Unfavorable Treatment Center Review - Fall 2012

I would recommend looking elsewhere for drug and alcohol treatment. While there are definitely pros to this treatment facility, I think the cons far outweigh them. The staff is disorganized. There is a disconnect in communication from the counselors to the medical personnel to the techs. This makes it really difficult on the clients. Next, any special dietary needs of the clients (i.e. allergies) are not adequately addressed. In fact, they are ignored. Next, I had a pair of shoes stolen by a staff member. When I discovered this, I made both a written and a verbal complaint and both were ignored. To date (several months later), I have not received an explanation, a resolution or an apology for the missing shoes. Lastly, the billing of the insurance is out of control. My insurance company was billed $490 per UA to a company in FL. When I attempted to call the number of the billing party (the lab), the phone number was disconnected. I talked with Awakenings about the lab they use and they didn't have any idea who their UA's were sent to or the amount that was being charged to insurance companies. In addition, my insurance company was billed for a service that they claimed I received three weeks after I left their facility. I contacted Awakenings to have this resolved and never received a call back (as promised) or a resolution with my insurance company. As a side note...I am sober, not bitter, just trying to help someone in need make an informed decision when selecting a treatment center. We have enough to worry about without concerns about disorganization, dietary needs, stolen items, and insurance issues (to name a few). Good luck.

The safest place I have ever gone to tx.

the people that are currently in charge of running this facility are wise and compassionate. i have been to numerous facilities for tx. always i left running cause it was not safe to have the experience i needed to see clearly. but not this time! i finally found a place that had the maturity and life experience to understand what I needed. i am grateful to the staff and I owe the rest of my life to the experience they allowed me to have. thank you
