The Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy is a special service district formed in 1935 by the Salt Lake City Commission. Based in Sandy, Utah, the district provides wholesale water to Salt Lake City, Sandy and the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District in Utah. It is administered through a board of trustees comprised of individuals appointed by the Salt Lake City Council and the Sandy City Council. The district is additionally in charge of Salt Lake Aqueduct that was built in 1951 to transport water from Deer Creek Reservoir to Little Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant. The plant treats water 24 hours, seven days a week, and it has a maximum capacity of more than 110 million gallons a day.
