Founded in 1977, Anchor Oyster Bar is a small, locally-owned legacy seafood restaurant and fish market in the Castro serving sustainably-caught fish, shellfish, crab, oysters, and specially prepared seafood dishes, including its signature cioppino dish, which was beautifully described in a New York Times article in May of 2022. Located on Castro Street between 18th and 19th streets, the restaurant occupies a small storefront with a large plate glass window and trademark blue awning, with an intimate interior characterized by linoleum floors, a long white marble bar, chrome chairs, and a daily specials board. Anchor Oyster Bar has been owned and operated by Roseann Grimm for its entire 45-year history. Grimm attributes her love and knowledge of seafood to her grandfather, Nicola Desimone, a fisherman from Amalfi, Italy who worked on salmon and crab boats in North Beach and who opened a seafood market and oyster bar in the neighborhood during the turn of the 20th century.Founded in 1977, Anchor Oyster Bar is a small, locally-owned legacy seafood restaurant and fish market in the Castro serving sustainably-caught fish, shellfish, crab, oysters, and specially prepared seafood dishes, including its signature cioppino dish, which was beautifully described in a New York Times article in May of 2022. It's great. But may not be worth the wait out front.

Many people rave about this place and I understand why. Seafood is cooked simply and served generously. My salad had warm croutons which is a nice touch. Service is always efficient and comes with a smile. But here's my beef - the place is VERY small and waits for a table can be long. Really long. And everyone waits outside on a bench in front of the restaurant on the sidewalk. That's fine on a nice night, not so great when the rain is falling. They also used to let you drink wine while waiting outside. Evidently that's against "regulations" and they can't do it anymore. So consider this - as good as the food is think twice on a busy night and be warned that it just may not be worth the time. Of course if they ever let you drink wine out there again the time will go faster!

It is like being in Boston

The resaurant reminds me of home a lunch counter and a few small tables serving the best clam chowder west of Boston.
