Revere (Rip) Kinkel, MD, is a board-certified, internationally recognized neurologist and multiple sclerosis (MS) expert. He is devoted to improving the diagnosis and care for people with MS and related disorders such as transverse myelitis; optic neuritis; neuromyelitis optica; autoimmune encephalitis; and systemic immune disorders that affect the central nervous system, including sarcoidoisis and lupus. He makes particular use of rehabilitative therapies, advanced medication regimens, and alternate models of care to improve the quality of life for multiple sclerosis patients. Dr. Kinkel has been actively involved in advancing multiple sclerosis research. In collaboration with researchers at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging in Boston, Dr. Kinkel helped identify the relationship among cortical inflammation, demyelination and atrophy, and the onset of progressive disease using combined positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resource imaging (MRI).His secondary research focuses on clinical trials of therapeutics in multiple sclerosis. He has also developed the use of internet portals for people with multiple sclerosis, providing patients with resources and information to better manage their disease.Dr. Kinkel has written numerous book chapters and published over 100 articles in medical journals, including Annals of Neurology, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Multiple Sclerosis Journal, Neurology, and the New England Journal of Medicine.Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Kinkel served as division chief of Neuroimmunology and Demyelinating Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and as an associate professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Previously, he was medical director of the Cleveland Clinic Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis.He completed his fellowship in neuroimmunology and residency in neurology and at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Kinkel earned his medical degree from State University of New York at Buffalo. He is board-certified in neurology.Dr. Kinkel is actively involved in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and is a member of the research and development advisory board for Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis.
