Paul Kim, MD, is a board-certified cardiologist who specializes in treating patients with advanced heart failure, including those who need ventricular assist devices (VADs) or heart transplants. Dr. Kim also has specialized training in performing and interpreting cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MRI) and cardiovascular computed tomography (CCT) studies. As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Kim instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research interests include improving the accuracy of cardiovascular imaging for patients with heart failure or patients who have undergone heart transplantation or VAD implantation. Dr. Kim is also the lead investigator in a study using cardiovascular MRI in heart transplant patients. His work has been published in leading medical journals and also supported by National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIH/NIBIB) and Heart Failure Society of America.Dr. Kim completed his fellowship in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and transplant cardiology at UC San Diego Health. He did fellowships in general cardiology and advanced cardiovascular imaging at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. During his fellowship, Dr. Kim received the Edwin Alderman Award for Excellence in Clinical Research.He earned his medical degree from UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Kim is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
