Branko Huisa-Garate, MD, is a board-certified vascular neurologist who specializes in treating cerebrovascular diseases such as acute ischemic stroke, cerebrovascular malformations, vascular dementia and vascular cognitive impairment. Dr. Huisa-Garate directs the Stroke Fellowship Program at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research interests include cerebral small vessel disease and vascular cognitive impairment. He has published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and also reviews for many medical journals in neurology and neuroscience.Previously, Dr. Huisa-Garate was an assistant professor in the Neurology Department at UC Irvine and served as director of University of New Mexicos Stroke Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He joined UC San Diego Health to become a part of the vanguard of medical care, discovery in medicine and teaching. He completed a fellowship in vascular neurology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and a residency in neurology at University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Huisa-Garate earned his medical degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru. He is board-certified in neurology and vascular neurology.Dr. Huisa-Garate is a member of American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association.Outside of work, he enjoys the outdoors, including camping, hiking and kayaking.
