I have been with Talamantez katara for more than 10 years. I enjoy the workouts and have fun everytime I attend. There is not an age limit, anyone can attend and benefit from Karate.
The kids programs are excellent. The instructors engage the young children. They teach them how to be disciplined, respectful, and goal oriented.

We're happy with the lessons, what is going on. No one yells at each other (except Kia) this is whole class.

Michael is still in training to be a great leader. He was just told he has ADHD so the WOUNDERFUL INSTRUCTOR him control his own behavior. he is better now. we were able to go to Wisconsin.

Please be VERY cautious of the...

Please be VERY cautious of the written contract you sign and read the small print!! We just finished our seven month contract with Talamantez Karate. I am not one to ever write a bad review, but I do not want another innocent, hardworking parent to go through what we just went through. I will admit that I was hesitant to enroll my son with this group because of the negative reviews I read. But we tried out two classes and my son loved it and Master Talamantez was so great with him. We signed a seven month contract. My son enjoyed every class and I really liked what he was being taught. I did feel throughout the seven months that we were constantly being asked for more money (whether it being equipment we were pressured into purchasing, but only used a couple of times, belt promotions, weekend events - all of which cost additional money), but we continued to do all that was offered because our son really enjoyed it. We recently informed Master Talamantez that we would be taking a break from karate at the end of our contract, although would return at a later point because our son has really enjoyed it and we would re-sign up then. This is where things turned extremely ugly. We were told that our contract was automatically renewed for another seven months because they had not received a 30 days written notice of cancellation. I could not believe they were trying to force us into another seven month contract after being such great members. I have worked in the legal field for years and always read the fine print. I was never notified of a 30 day written requirement and was appalled with how we were being treated. He told us we would be responsible for paying for an additional seven months and he did not budge. After seven months of paying and going to karate, we were treated so poorly. Luckily, we were actually within our 30 day window, so we were able to end our contract legally. It is still so upsetting that they put money before people and goodwill. We continued going to karate until the end of our contract, but there was a very noticeable negative way we were treated compared to before. This is not a way to treat paying customers, especially customers you want to return. The sad thing is we really would have returned. It was not until they showed that they care more about money than their students that I realized how horrible of an organization this is. We will continue karate, just at another karate business.

satisfied karate parent

Talamantez Karate has been great for my children. They do a great job of instilling great self esteem and discipline in the students. My children.have been attending for about a year and I feel very satisfied as a parent of where my children are spending their spare time. My husband and I enjoy the events that the children participate in and how they involve the whole family including their friends as well. This dojo has really out done themselves with their quality of service. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a great karate school for their child or children.

This school will take you for a lot of money do not fall for the high pressure sales tactics. I understand a business wanting to make a profit but the quality of instructions is very poor. They promote everyone every two months regardless if they have a good understanding of the fundamentals. This is a way to get money out of you. They will also have high pressure sales on equipment if you do not purchase you are made to stand aside while the other students are instructed. The equipment is only used once or twice then they move on to another scam to make money off of you. They also have an elite program that you pushed into joining that cost more money. The instruction is no better in the regular class than the other except that they get more time. One more thing i personally went up to rank of Black belt in less than a year left the school and learned real quick the belt came with no knowledge of true karate techniques. Entered my first tournament in new dojo as a white belt thinking i could clean up and was shocked to learn what a proper taught student can do. After several years and moved back up with as a proper black belt and entered several tournament and hold 1st and 2nd place winning in state championships. Can say that in order to learn properly there is no short cuts to a black belt. Talamantez black belt's are worthless.

I have enjoyed this experience very much especially my two sons. I have notice alot of differences between myself and the boys being here, especially being able to grow and progress into young men. With my youngest son his confidence, attitude, and his own self-discipline has shown regardless of his speech impediment, and gladly appreciate what this program has done for my youngest. My oldest son, he is hard-charger and once he got involved his attitude has changed and has began to set high goals for himself. I would highly recommend this school for any family, because this experience has made a stronger relationship between us.

Avoid

My son has attended Talamantez for years. We have always done what was asked of us and attended twice weekly. At times, I felt a belt promotion was offered too soon so I would decline for my son. It felt like buying a belt rank, instead of him earning it, since each new rank is $60. Last week master Talamantez took me in his office in the middle of class and said we needed a new one year contract at $200 per month in order for my son to achieve his black belt by June. He also told me the other instructor had given up on my son. I told him I would need to discuss everything with my husband and get back to him. I was appalled when the next thing happened. we walked back out, I sat in the parent chairs, and he called my son by name in front of the other students in the middle of class and dismissed him 15 minutes early! He was humiliated and confused. They purport to teach confidence. We will never set foot in there again. We had never been given an additional bill nor were we delinquent in any way.

thank you

Thank YOU Sensai

My story starts at age three watching power rangers in front of the tv learning the movies and what not until i was inrolled in talamantez karate. then i relize i was some where that i felt proud, confident, and loyal. i felt that every time i talked about karate i felt part of the talamantez family. Training harder then any other student i could see. beside my instructors left to right i felt that this is one of my greatest accomplishments in my life. i trained till i was 7 then i had no choice but to leave under my life style and the constant moving. after that i felt empty, and like a lost soul... Until the age of 16 i was passing by the studio on bandera rd. and saw it was open. i stepped in side bowed and i saw sensai perez, flashbacks came to me as i saw him. we talked and decided that it was time to come back. as he spoke with Master T it gave me the thrill to see my master once again. so he invited me to stop by the studio on redland. so the next day i was off. we got lost but we mange to find it. as i walked in i saw a some what bald man and got scared but "never judge a book by its cover" he is one of the nices man there Sensai Wurth. he is excelent with children any age. then i saw Master. Master T still looked as he did i can tell it ment alot that i was coming in to see him. when he dicused how it will work i was inshock! i was just a boy the day before and then i was a boy with life and meaning and a purpose. which is to bring peace to many people. when i did my first class i was smiling constatly. and when i left i cried to myself saying"im home" it is a very emotial experience for me beacuse i was so lost in the world with out karate. As of right now i am 17 and i am the coach for XMA( EXTREME MARTIAL ARTS) and i enjoy doing it. i also train with two OUT OF THIS WORLD AMAZING INSTRUCTORS like Sensai Griggs. She is the most positive, proud women i have ever met, she is also a great person to talk to. Then there is Sensai Alex Talamantez when i was younger and until now he has been my greatest insperating in my life i think of him as my father how he train as a child thats how i want to be trained i will go the distance for this instructor no matter what. when he pushes me i know its for a purpose and i respect it . my goal is to spare with Sensai Alex win or lose i will be proud beacuse i know it is a honor to spare agenst him. please if anyone reads this please call Talamantez Family Karate they might just change your life for the best like it did for me.

Horrible place,

As a PREVIOUS student and assistant instructor, this place was so great in the old days. Now Mr T and his "instructors" are money hungry greedy people. Sure its easy to say "well dont sign the contract". But to have THEM with a rebuttal of "well I guess you do not want anything better for your child or yourself and your money has been a waste thusfar".. so sign a $300/mo contract and improve yourself. Feeding these kids lies about their self esteem and ability is just the most horrible thing a business can do to make money. I returned to them at one point to get back into it. I saw 7yo's with BLACK BELTS who cant even do a proper stance, punch or kick. But oh yea they have good "self esteem". This is a rating system based on skill, not personal satisfaction. Everyone who has dealt with these parasites must report them. I pursued my black belt DURING Talamantez, in Taekwondo with another school and sustained a injury to my hand and wrist, fracture, due to breaking bricks and extensive training that I NEVER got at Talamantez, the injury was my fault... anyways. They said they would "work with me", because I wasnt working due to my injurty and not attending classes and all I would need is "medical verification" and they can work with the payments. Of course, they lied. 30 days later, sent to collections. Talked to Joe (instructor who can barely lift his leg to his waist yet bosses kids around), and he said "well you signed the contract"... I hung up, i didnt want to hear the rest of that bogus jabber. AVOID these people. Report them. Feel free to email me with any questions... emperialmassacre@yahoo.com

previous student/instructor

Me being a LONG time student/instructor, I know how these people are. They have special classes that teach "instructors" how to con people. They take us to sporting events and get us to sign people up and bother people when they are trying to do things, they are hard solicitors. He has a marketting individual that we would meet with every sat. to go over soliciting tactics and practice on people to get them to sign up. He would NOT let me off the phone when i told him I want to cancel. He would call me every day saying stuff like "Hey I ran into your friend at the store he says you should stay with us"and one time he brought my fiance into by saying "I called you but your fiance answered and said you should stay with us"...even though me and my fiance both have different phones. I got conned into signing a $6000 contract..yes..$6000 I had to pay about $350/month. I injured my hand, and they said they would work with me, I went and got my medical release, but before I know it, I have a letter in my hand saying I had to pay $6000 in a few weeks or it would be turned over to account services.WHAT?!?..My injury made me really think and realize how money hungry they are. I was a student there for about 8 years a long time ago, when karate actually meant something to them.now its all about money. I see 5 year olds that are black belts that cant even stand up straight or throw a simple kick. Just because you train a child to say YES SIR 50 times in 1 hour doesnt mean he deserves his black belt. The reason why he promotes so fast is because with every rank up, he increases the monthly payment and makes the parent think that they are getting into a "better" program. Only thing different is MORE of a work out, which I can easily give my own kid at home. And he makes you feel like S%^& if you dont sign, like if you do not care about anything or anyone else. If anyone wants more info, email me EMPERIALMASSACREatYAHOO. Do not let these people con anyone else...they are money hogs.
