9 years ago this had the best sushi in town. Back in 2003 I had my first sushi experience at Shogun. I never cared for fish and the thought of eating raw smelly fish did not sound appetizing. After a few Saporos I finally took a bite of nigiri. That bite changed me into a sushi lover. I found that good sushi should never taste fishy.

Around 2004/ 5? Their best chef Takashi left and opened his own restaurant and I have not been back to Shogun. Recently I found a coupon and decided to try it again.

They haven't changed the decor and everything looked very dirty - especially the floors. You have to take off your shoes to sit in the booth and everything I touched was sticky. We thought - OK sometimes a hole in the wall can have amazing food. So we gave them the benefit of the doubt. We ordered 4 rolls and some nigiri. The rolls were very messy looking and they weren't very good. The nigiri tasted VERY fishy....it was HORRIBLE! That was the worst sushi experience in my life.

Their prices are very high for a sushi place - around $12 per roll. I would expect those prices at Takashi but not a dump like this. If you are looking for good sushi, I recommend Takashi or Sapa. Sapa is a bigger restaurant so if there is a wait to be seated, it won't be as long as Takashi. Plus Sapa's prices are about 1/4 less....about $8 per roll and they do take reservations. Takashi is just across the street and for the price you'll have a much better dining experience.

To sum it up, if this had been my first sushi experience, I would never touch sushi again. I'm glad there are plenty of other place to eat sushi in Salt Lake. Because there is no way this place can stay in business.
