This is a seriously great apar...

This is a seriously great apartment!!! Do not pass it by. I moved out because of job relocation; otherwise I would still be living there. Both the building and management are top notch.

I lived there Jan 2011 to May 2012, having previously been in my own house for 6 years. Because of this I was picky. The Gallery has both the combination of amenities (the place a boutique feel) and security that I needed to make moving from out of state and living in St. Louis very comfortable. The management was both flexible and super responsive whenever I needed anything. But I think the deciding factor was knowing the owner of the building was on the property from time to time. To me, this ensured the property would be maintained.

I really can’t say it enough; this is an A+ property. Don’t let it slip by. Go see for yourself. I hope you will be as happy there as I was.

I recently moved from out of s...

I recently moved from out of state to the Gallery Apartments on Washington. I was looking for a studio/efficiency anywhere in the city of Saint Louis that was less than $700/mo. I toured a number of places, and the Gallery Apartments was 1) infinitely cleaner and more well-equipped than the competition and 2) the second-cheapest rent I found.

Coming from my previous city, this part of Saint Louis first struck me as seedy. I thought that I'd be constantly looking over my shoulder. Let me tell you, I was wrong. The Gallery is filled with young professionals, graduate students, and some older adults. The street is a mix of town houses and suburb-style houses. The streets are always well-lit, and the off-street parking is gated and has a flood-light always on. Regardless, there are Jaguars and BMW's parked overnight every night without incident. The neighbors are extremely friendly. A few streets north gets a little rough, but a few blocks west are some of the nicest places in town and a few blocks east is the center of arts in the city.

The location is great, though I'd recommend having a car. Biking is also a viable option, but walking will take a while to get to anywhere but the grocery store and some fast-food joints.

My efficiency is huge compared to most. The bed is lofted, opening up the floor space. Washer and dryer in unit. Large kitchen appliances. Hardwood floors. Granite counters and bathroom tiles. Well-kept hallways. The entire premises is under video surveillance and you need pass-codes to get anywhere inside. The inner area between the two buildings has a nice grill and seating area.

The employees are extremely responsive and helpful, and I've never had an issue with them. I honestly have no complaints so far.

Highly recommended.

Don't Be Fooled

Renter Beware: Unsafe area (shooting 1 block up), frequent car break-ins (including in the gated lot), and our next door neighbors had roaches. Maintenance is sub-par. There always seems to be litter strewn in the front of the building, and in the back near to where the dumpsters are. The maintenance could care less, we have seen them walk by litter which we then picked up & disposed of. Poor, horrid and often absent management. Definitely not a place you can call home. Don't be fooled. You can absolutely find better apartments.

An updated fair & honest revie...

An updated fair & honest review from an ex tenant:

This place used to be a great place to live. I also experienced 2-faced people with management. I caught them in several lies (they'd tell me one story, and later tell me the exact opposite). Example: they initially told me that a neighbor admitted to damaging my property, but later said he denied it. Why the sudden flip? This lying by management was actually a pattern I began to notice during my 2 years of living there. The Whittier units are next to a house with a dog that barks CONTINUALLY, making it so I can’t sleep in my own apartment. I work at night and don’t enjoy being awoken at 6 AM. I also suspect management framed me for one or more of the reasons they asked to not renew my lease.

I moved out over a month ago and have yet to see my deposit check. I was told over 2 weeks ago it was going out the next day (another lie, I suspect). I would pay several months’ rent at once to avoid their $10 credit card fee they added. Of my $300 deposit (not including non-refundable pet deposit), they say I am due $135, which I have yet to see in the mail (despite being told over 2 weeks ago that they'd send it out the next day. Another lie, I suspect). They subtracted $90 from my deposit for parking that they forgot to bill me, and they tried to charge me extra (beyond the $75 they subtract out of everyone’s deposit for carpet cleaning). My unit was dirty when I moved in despite being a "new" unit, and there were carpet stains & construction mess EVERYWHERE. I was fortunate enough to have made a note of this on my move-in sheet, so they couldn’t charge me.

The pictures they show on their website are nice, but they do not maintain the grounds. They let many plants die, there are more weeds than grass (often overgrown), and it takes multiple tenants complaining about the green water in the fountain for them to do anything. Jennie is very rude and has lied to me repeatedly. I suspect they think that telling what they consider to be “white lies” to get tenants complaining about an issue to be quiet. Example: the catch basin for the A/C water drain wasn’t draining. They initially told me not to worry about it, that it's normal and that there was no drain in it for legal reasons. This made no sense to me, and is in fact UNTRUE. When the water started growing mold, I told them it was a safety issue for my cat (she could drink the water & get sick). Only then did they agree to fix it. Only excuses I can think of: LAZINESS and SHADY practices.

Also, there’s a trash can for dog waste located in front of the back door that smells like hot feces because they don’t empty it for months at a time. They won’t move it farther from the door (despite complaints from tenants). My girlfriend would gag from the smell during the hot summer months. They get to maintenance issues on their own schedule. One maintenance issue (wiring) remained unfixed for a year, and they only did a temporary fix that ended up damaging the wall plate (which I replaced out of my own money so I could get my deposit back, which I still haven’t seen). I also saw several insects (including some that seriously scared my girlfriend), but I happened to be more amused watching my cat kill them.

Also, when I moved in, I was told the neighbors are homeowners & the cameras deter crime, but despite what they say, this isn’t really the CWE. There ARE car break-ins and bike thefts (even in the secured lots). Just another one of many lies they tell to their tenants to convince them this rip-off is a good place to live.

For $300 less than I was paying at the Gallery, I found a new unit with over 2x the space of my previous unit...AND a garage...AND a basement for storage. Seriously, this place used to be awesome, but has gone to the DOGS with the noise problems, raising rent/fees, and mistreating tenants.

GATED PARKING, CAMERA SURVELLIANCE. I am a student so its nice to live somewhere that ius secure, quiet ,and affordable. Apparently these place used to be in bad shape but you could never tell. It really feels like an art gallery in this place.
