The Department of Human Assistance is a division of the county government of Sacramento County, Calif. The department provides programs to low-income households, homeless people, senior citizens and veterans. It administers various federal, state and local programs designed to provide cash assistance, food stamps and health insurance for low-income residents of Sacramento County. In addition, it offers no-cost or low-cost health insurance to adults who are 65 years of age or older and families with children who are deprived of support due to parental unemployment or underemployment. The department also provides daily lunches to elderly people and offers volunteer programs for seniors. Its volunteer programs include the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the Foster Grandparent Program and the Senior Companion Program. In addition, the department provides assistance to veterans and their dependents in preparing and presenting claims for benefits.
