In 1951, Giancarlo and Victoria Scala purchased the Elms Inn and became a member of the Elms Inn's long history. The couple ran the Inn with the help of their four sons, Mario, Carl, Richard, and Bob. While several of their sons decided to pursue other careers, Mario trained under his father and worked in the kitchen, while Bob came on board after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. and worked the front of the house'. The Inn continued to grow along with the Scala family, and as members of the family passed on, others stepped in to continue the family tradition. Sons Mario and Bob took on the role of running the Inn full time in the early 1970s. A true family affair, Mario's wife Violet took on his role after her husband's death. Edward and William Scala joined the Inn in the 1980s and in 1982, the Inn underwent a renovation. In 1996, the Scala family took the Inn to a whole new level. Owners Violet, Stephen, Edward, and William Scala joined forces with renowned restaurateur Brendan Walsh, and truly placed The Elms Inn on the culinary map of New England. Elms Restaurant and Tavern was promptly renovated, and Brendan Walsh earned four stars and numerous awards for dining excellence. New life was breathed into the Inn and it began to catch the eye of the world. In 1996, Esquire Magazine named the Restaurant among the Top New Restaurants in America. In 1999, the Inn was honored by the Connecticut Family Business of the Year Awards. And in September 1997, The Elms Inn was named Inn of the Month by Travel + Leisure. Today, the Scala family continues to care for the Inn and its members with a level of skill and hospitality that consistently brings it great praise. The Scalas take pride in a tradition of excellence that spans over half a century.
