Just finished reading reviews for Monro Muffler and I am very happy I didn't waste my time going there. With that said I felt obligated to share my recent experience at Mavis Tire (June 2014). I have been a loyal Mavis customer for probably the last 10 years or so. (I have 5 vehicles that require tires frequently and NYS inspections annually, I commute to NYC daily, so I put tires on multiple cars every other year) I first met, Pat the shop manager at the Wappinger’s Store on Rt 9 North. Pat was extremely helpful and seemed to be genuine. A few years later I met Pat again, he was given the new store on Rt 55 Freedom Plains Rd. in Lagrangeville, N.Y. Again Pat was extremely helpful and seemed genuine. Unfortunately my last three visits over the past year and a half have not been as favorable. Pat and the rest of the Mavis service staff seem more interested in selling you parts and services that are unneeded and unwanted. Again unfortunately for Mavis and the rest of these fly by night mechanics they don’t know what I know! (I am a real Mechanic, I’ve been turning wrenches my whole life, I'm 53 years old , I am a Supervisor for NYCTA and I have forgotten more than these guys know) I put $800.00 worth of tires on my 2006 Ford Focus and requested a NYS Inspection they wanted to sell me shocks, a power steering system flush, and a wheel alignment. My 2005 Chevrolet Express van same thing, I bought $1000.00 worth of tires requested a NYS Inspection; they suggested a four wheel brake job and a wheel alignment. My most recent experience June 17, 2014 and my last Mavis Tire experience was when I brought my 1996 Toyota Camry in for a NYS Inspection. It was a slow weekday for them. They brought the Camry in pulled all four wheels and rear brake drums, spent about 30 minutes going over the car. They found both front axle boots torn (which I already knew about) the rest of the car looked good. Pat asked me into the shop so he could show me what they had found! Pat proceed to say that what they were suggesting would not effect my NYS Inspection but was recommended, first I would need 2 new front axles about $150.00 each, he also said that my brake fluid should be flushed for a special of $89.99 (MORE BS) and lastly I needed a rear brake cleaning and adjustment $30.00. Granted I know that they are in business to make money, like I said I am a real mechanic (fortunately for me I don't have to get dirty anymore), so I conceded and allowed them to perform the rear brake cleaning and adjustment. I stood at the window watched the kid on the shop floor move garbage cans under each rear wheels. He then grabbed a flat screwdriver and gave two clicks on the adjusting stars (never cleaned anything) put the drums and wheels back on the Camry. He was done and so was I...

If you chose to read this review in its entirety and I know that it is a little long winded, my suggestion to you is to find a good neighborhood mechanic. Forget about all of these so called automotive repair shops that do it all. These guys remind me of when Sears (during the 80's) was accused of doing the same thing. SELLING UNNEEDED AND UNWANTED PARTS AND SERVICES TO UNKNOWING VICTIMS (AKA CUSTOMERS).

Or an even better suggestion, look to the future (about three years from now) for the Grand Re-opening of my repair shop T & K Auto Repair! Relocated from SI, NY (circa 1990) to Dutchess County, New York location to be determined. I guess the good that will come out of this is that I will be able to provide affordable quality repair services for a desperate industry. Sincerely Tom Cummings
