In the years before the Korean War, Jim Mayhew worked for the Carpenter Funeral Home, in Plymouth. He was drafted into the Army and when they found out that he was a licensed embalmer and funeral director, he was ushered to Japan. He spent six months, in Japan, embalming and preparing deceased soldiers for their return trip home to their families. He was transferred to Brooklyn New York and was part of the first unit to personally escort soldiers home to their families. He traveled the United States by railroad and made many friends of which they are still in touch with him today. After the war, he returned to Plymouth and left the funeral industry to own and operate a small grocery store on Main St. in Plymouth called Volpe's Market. In late 1970, Jim and Eileen bought out the Carpenter Funeral Home and they opened Mayhew Funeral Home, on Langdon St. in Plymouth. We have been serving the town of Plymouth and the surrounding communities for the past 37 plus years, with the mind set that the families needs come first. In July of 1983, they bought the former Hardwick-McLean Funeral Home, in Meredith, and I, Peter Mayhew, went to work for my parents. My father handed me the keys to the building and said, "Do what you can to make it work". We have now been serving the town of Meredith and the surrounding communities for the past 24 years. We are a family owned and operated funeral home. We offer all the services you could find in the funeral service industry. Our staff consists of myself, Peter Mayhew, my wife Kelley Mayhew, Travis Brunt and Jason Gauthier.
