I spent my college years reading the texts of Plato, Kant and other political thinkers and took my pre-med courses as electives. I majored in Political Science because I knew I would be practicing medicine for the rest of my professional life and I wanted to learn about other disciplines. I really didn’t think about how the study of political philosophy might affect my practice of medicine, but I use my critical thinking skills every day while taking care of patients. It also taught me to be reflective and listen to my patients. Being a good physician requires being a good listener and taking time with patients no matter how busy you are.
