I am black and had a great time!

My co-workers' son is starting his own music production company and they had an album release party, the place was very nice and easy to find. Every one there was black expect two bar tenders. We had a blast, my husband and i are thinking about holding a party there ourselves. The only problem was that the bar tenders were clueless about some of the drinks I asked for and never buy a long island ice tea it tastes like dirt water and the drinks are a bit expensive. Usually when we go out we befriend the bartenders but I was not feeling the (black) bartender we wasn't that friendly even though his drink he made was the best i had that night. Actually the white older guy was very nice, like bartenders are supposed to be. Overall we enjoyed ourselves maybe the guy from the first review was there on a bad night. Chester ave is kind of in "the hood" they have no room to discriminate.

Exclusionary & Racist

Sad to say we tried this place on karaoke night (Monday) because we thought it would be fun and safe since it's on/near UPenn campus. We chose our songs, waiting on each other so that we could all sing in a row and leave at the same time. Requests submitted, we patronized the bar, laughed and sang along with some of the performances (all white collge-age kids), even taking pictures with some of them. The crowd dwindled and we checked on our requests. One of us got called up which was our sign to stay close to the stage as we should all have been singing after that. I walked to the dj and saw that my name was next and relayed the information to my friends. After friend was called up - the shocked face of the emcee was amusing - and sang, the dj felt the need to comment about him being a black guy singing the song he sang (not a black song). Then the emcee and two friends got on stage and did an impromptu and bad beat box together. He then called several names, that did not include any of us. We checked again at the dj area and found that our names were no longer on top and when I asked the dj any idea when we'd be going or why we weren't next when one of us submitted all of our requests and had already sung, he wouldn't look at us but shrugged his shoulders and said could be now could be whenever, some people have left. True enough the crowd had continuously diminished but there were several more performances. When there was almost no one left in the place except the workers and maybe a handful of people we realized we were being purposely excluded and thought it was hugely unfair that everyone else got to sing with their friends even a few times we heard the emcee saying (You guys AGAIN?) and watched as people we'd already seen perform, performed again. We also noted there weren't any black faces in the crowd except us and 1 girl sitting alone who left after a brief visit. We all left - I apologized profusely for having invited them to my area for this event and ruined their celebration. I'd seen the place advertised alot and thought it would be sae and fun. They might as well hang a sign on the door that says "Blacks unwelcome but certainly allowed". I would never go here again. Maybe it will be okay for you if you're just one black person and you come with alot of white people. Maybe they won't feel the need to prove themselves by interrupting your turn, nor trying to prove themselves by showing they know something about black culture from 40 years ago. They have to let you in, but not really. What a disappointment - shame on you, University City!!!
