The Marin Humane Society, located in Novato, Calif., was established in 1907 by Ethel Tompkins and a group of individuals who wanted to do something about lost and abused animals. It provides care to more than 9,000 homeless animals each year. The society offers a wide range of programs and services, including adoption outposts, animal services, behavior and training, companions in crisis, education, e-news, foster care, guardians for life, K-9 care program, pet partnership program, and clinic. The Marin Humane Society reunites hundreds of lost animals with their owners, and assists seniors and the disabled with pet care. It also places more than 98 percent of animals available for adoption into new homes. The Marin Humane Society is supported by memberships, contributions and bequests, and operates as a nonprofit, charitable organization.
