Generic Theater for Kids is a division of the Generic Theater, Hampton Road's "off-Broadway" playhouse, now located in the Little Hall, down under Chrysler Hall in Norfolk. The Theater has been offering the area's most progressive dramas, comedies and musicals since 1981. The theater prides itself on producing new plays and new interpretations of the classics. The Generic Theater is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. GTK was established to introduce young people to the theater and the enjoyment of being on stage and in front of a camera. During the school year, classes are offered on Saturday and weeknights in acting, musical theater and acting for TV and Movies. After each session, students perform a play or musical and every student has a speaking part in the show. All parts are played by students, performing on the Generic Theater stage. GTK also runs two-week theater camps during the summer. Classes and camp sessions are held in the Generic Theater and in rehearsal rooms of Chrysler Hall. Generic Theater creative directors, technical lighting, sound and staging personnel, house manager, graphic designer and other Generic Theater staff and volunteers support the Generic Theater for Kids.
