Pennsylvania state laws are very strict regarding rabies. All PETS 12 weeks of age and older are REQUIRED to be vaccinated current against this horrible disease, whether it is an "indoor only" pet or not. Because rabies is a fatal disease, any case that shows symptoms of the disease in an unvaccinated animal is a serious situation. When that animal has bit someone, or has been in the hospital exposing itself to numerous staff members, the hospital is required by state law to require testing. We as medical professionals are required to follow these guidelines. As we understand that this sometimes may be considered cruel, we do have to follow these guidelines provided by the state law. There are "indoor only" pets and others who in the past have contracted this disease. We once treated an 8 week old beagle puppy that attended a community picnic with its new owner and was giving lots of "kisses" to all the attendees. Four days after the picnic, the puppy started showing some symptoms and quickly got very sick. The puppy was tested and came back positive for rabies. Our rules are not only to protect animals, but to protect those family members and health care providers who are dedicated to pets well-being.
