Came into Mark's Computer repair today, May 17, 2021 to find a replacement laptop charger for my son's laptop. Upon presenting the laptop to who I assume is "Mark," he wrote down on a scrap piece of paper the volt/amp requirements for the charger I need, and directed me to two boxes on a shelf, each packed with well over 100 random laptop chargers. After 20 minutes of me looking through his own equipment for what I need, my son and I finally found a compatible charger. When I asked if I could plug it into one of the several unused power outlets, he told me that I would have to pay an additional $10 if I wanted it "tested." I told him I didn't want to do anything other than verify it works. He told me my choices were to A: Give him 10 dollars for the charger and "gamble" if it works or not when I get home, or B: Pay him $20 for him to "run a full diagnostic" on the charger. Not only did I have to rummage through his own used inventory for the correct laptop charger, but I would have to pay him an extra $10 if i wanted to verify it's operational status. To clarify, I asked him "So you're going to charge me an additional $10 just to verify if your product works?" He said "Correct." I set the charger down, on top of the display case i had just spent 20 minutes next to, on my hands and knees digging through his charger boxes, and told him "Thank you for your time. Maybe if you treated your customers a little better, you'd get better business." He told me that I "just didn't understand the concept."
Well I do understand the concept of Capitalism and a Free Market, and it was a great opportunity to teach my adolescent son the beauty of taking your business elsewhere when someone tries to swindle you. Found a brand new charger online for less than 20 dollars. The real shame, is I had that option from the get-go, but instead wanted to support a local business. This one will never receive a dime from me, and hopefully anyone else who reads this. God Bless America.
