My wife spent 20 years in the military, half the time of which she was away from our small children who were born when she still had nine years to serve on active duty. I emailed the Russian Tea Room and told them I was bringing her to their restaurant to celebrate her retirement (a four-hour round trip ride by train into the city). I wasn't asking for a free dessert or drink, but I would have thought they might have at least said to her, "Thank you for your service to our country." Nothing. The waiters were nice, the food was OK (although the noodles in my beef stroganoff were cold), and the ambiance was more impressive online than in real life.
