The New York State Department of Law provides legal counseling services for the state of New York and represents the state in court proceedings. It protects state agencies and citizens through the investigation and prosecution of organized crime and Medicaid fraud. The department also brings civil and criminal actions against violators of environmental law. Its legal functions are divided into five major divisions that include state counsel, criminal justice, economic justice, social justice, and appeals and opinions. The New York State Department of Law has a staff of more than 2,000 employees. The department is a part of the government of the state of New York.
