Complaint to contractor board!!

I am filing this complaint against McNamara Pump and Electric (License #7570620) for failure to complete work that I hired them to complete. They seem to have no concern about a customer who trusted and paid them in good faith and desperately needed their help.

I am 72 years old, disabled as a result of a broken neck and also had quadruple coronary by-pass surgery so I’m not as capable as I used to be. My balance is not good because of the spinal injury so when I have to go out to try to operate the well pump when it’s dark I often lose my balance and fall. I live in a rural mountain area of Julian. My home is totally “off the grid” so I must depend on solar power and a propane generator which powers the pumping of my water well. The well only works properly periodically and that’s why I was in need of professional assistance to repair it. Someone recommended McNamara Pump because they were supposed to be experts in both wells/pumps and the Kohler Generator which powers my system.

I called and discussed my electrical problem with the owner of McNamara Pump and Electric and told him it was a very dangerous situation for me – especially when I had to go out in the middle of the night to try to get my water pump to work. He talked a good talk and I felt that I might get the help I needed. The repairman came out in a few days, he was a nice guy.

After much checking he said he thought the problem was my “controller” from Atkinson Electric and that since I lived in such a rural area that I should order a new one but if it did not work I should give him a call. I believed him and followed his suggestion. I ordered a new controller ($269.00 as I recall). However, it did not help and I had the same problem as before he visited. He had instructed me as to how to bypass the electrical points by pushing and holding two buttons on the switch to get the water to fill my pressure tank.

After I determined that the controller was not the problem, I called McNamara Pump and was told it would be two weeks before they could get back to me. I called back several times and was put off. I left several messages but the owner would not call me back. This delay made it necessary to keep by-passing the points to cause the water to fill the pressure tank. One day the points sparked and smoke came out – the points were fried and I burned the tips of my fingers – this could have electrocuted me.

Since I followed the instructions of the technician from McNamara this caused me to have to by another set of breaker points and then replace them myself – I am not an electrician. To this day I still have to take a chance and manually by-pass the points to get water to my home. Since I live in a rural area other electricians don’t want to come out or take over another electrician’s mistakes.

I feel it is criminal that he left me in these dangerous circumstances – especially after taking my money without finishing the work he agreed to complete. My electrical system is not old – my home burned down in 2003 so a brand new system was installed. I did not want free work. I expected to pay for his next trip but I also expected him to repair my problem. He would not respond to my calls to correct the situation.

If I had my way, I would rescind his license. I believe that the money I paid him in good faith should be refunded to me, including the $269.00 his technician caused me to spend on a controller that I didn’t need.

As a result of the way I have been treated by McNamara Pump and Electric I could never refer this business to anyone, shame on them! It has been one year since they came to my home.

Please help, I feel he should pay for a conscientious electrician to fix my problem – I no longer trust him.

Respectfully submitted,

Ron Gatewood
