Houston Read Commission
Established in 1988, Houston Read Commission is a nonprofit urban literacy coalition that offers various educational programs. It promotes economic self-sufficiency and individual determination through specialty services, programs and projects for adult basic education, English as a second language, group discussion preparation, computer awareness, and family and financial literacy. In addition, the commission offers free training for tutors and instructors; promotes public and private sector partnerships to sponsor literacy programs and public awareness activities; maintains a central database on literacy services; and advocates local, state and federal agencies and the business community to enhance educational awareness.
