When I was a little girl I would ask my father to buy me some lipstick whenever we went to the drugstore. Ra-Tem was not cool with his little girl wearing lipstick but he would buy me toy makeup I would sit at my desk and pretend to put on makeup and use a towel as a wig and sing En Vogue songs for hours. I would sit and stare at pictures of Josephine Baker, Pattie LaBelle, and Grace Jones. Seeing Black women be glamorous was my sanctuary and pretending to wear makeup and get dresses up gave me confidence.When I got my license in 2010 I had no clue of what to do. The reality of defining what kind of esthetician I wanted to be took priority.
