Poor Customer Service and Rude Employees

I sent out a letter canceling my membership with Gold's Gym November 15, 2008. When I signed up 11 years ago it was my understanding that all I had to do was to send a letter and they would cancel my membership no questions asked. I have an open membership, which I was told that I can cancel at any time by just writing a letter. I was explicitly told I was not under a contractual obligation I could choose to terminate at any time.



My husband's credit card was compromised November 24th (the membership comes out of our joint account his credit card #) so they canceled that card and issued him another.



I got a notice that they charged my joint checking account for non payment for that account even after they were notified. I sent them a second letter stating that I had canceled my membership and that I should not be incurring fees asking them to refund the amount as they must have made an oversight.



I got a letter from their office (after trying to talk to a very rude employee) stating that they will not be canceling my account because money is due. That I must PAY them before they can cancel the account. I find this extremely poor manners and incredibly bad for business.



I had been a member with them in good standing for 11 years prior. They are quibbling over $44.95! The only reason they have a balance on the account is that they did not honor the letter, cancel the account and are holding my account hostage and insisting I pay for services I am not using and canceled 11/15/08. They want to continue to bill me each month for this service that was terminated.



What can I do? I can't seem to get anywhere talking to anyone at Gold's Gym, the people in the cancellation department turn a deaf ear and tell me there is nothing they can do about it and refuse to help in any way. Their professionalism is non-existent, lack of manners stellar, follow up is zero, and seem to be amused by my distress.
