The Botto family owns and operates C. W. Brown Sausage Company, maker of the finest home-made style sausage in the Delaware Valley. Sold in better stores area-wide, the sausage is a tasty delight to behold. Founded in 1887 by English settler, Cyrus Watson Brown, C.W. Brown & Co began as a sausage and scrapple processor in the South Jersey area. In 1965, Robert Botto, a former livestock buyer and slaughterer from South Philadelphia purchased the company from Cyrus Dobbs, the last living heir of Cyrus Watson Brown. Maintaining the "family-owned" atmosphere, Botto created his own blend of Italian seasonings for Italian sausage & meatballs under the Botto brand name, and also continuing to manufacture the fresh pork sausage and scrapple items with Brown's original recipe. Since then, Botto's has become the favorite brand of Italian sausage in many households of the Delaware Valley. In 1981, C.W. Brown started offering the product line in a Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), which so many companies now use today in their packaging practices. This package enables the meat departments to have an extended shelf life in each package, thus reducing shrink. This also gives stores the ability to have extra inventory so they are never out of stock and risk lost sales.
