When Larry Cano opened the first El Torito in 1954, he didnt simply transform a rundown tiki bar into a bustling Mexican restaurant, he launched a revolution. Legend has it that El Torito was seminal in popularizing Mexican restaurant staples like the frozen margarita, tableside guacamole and sizzling fajita plattersas well as the best occasions to enjoy them, like Taco Tuesday and Cinco De Mayo.

I went to this El Torrito about a year ago in Monterey and the place was great. The food was really good and the atmosphere was amazing. You dine right next to the ocean, the view is spectacular. When I went, the restaurant was clean and the service was great.

El Torito

Best view of any mexican restaurant in the area. Get a window seat! Perched out on the water. Great food, and a great setting.

terrible

This is the truth: the place reeked: I had to ask several times for clean plates, only to be offered another just as filthy! This place has to be the flag ship of FILTH. I guess the only reason it is still in business is because people on vacation look out the window, rather than look at their table, plates, utensils, and food. Just shameful. Management did want to make it right, but it is hard to go back. Trust me, I am a mountain man...that means, I am country. I am very familiar with dirt. Thus, I don't like filth at home, and don't tolerate it when I go to some place where I have to trust the people with stuff that goes into my family. I hope this helps some vacationer to avoid this dump.
