A trip to Northern Michigan is not complete without eating certain things, namely pasties and fudge. We had some great pasties from Macinaw City. These hefty meat, potato, and rutabaga filled patties are savory and filling. I can't eat mine without gravy and Brad prefers his with carrot, which might be sacrilege to traditionalists but you can't leave the shores without one in your belly!



Our pasties were picked up one day for carry out and eaten the next. You can choose from hot, frozen, and as we ordered them, cold pasties for your order and chicken as well as vegetarian are available. Gravy is sold on the side. The dining room is decidely low key with plastic chairs and styrofoam plates so plan for take out as the food and not the decor is the draw.



We had meat pasties filled with meat, potato, rutabagha, and onions. Heated in the oven for dinner the next day, the crust was crisp and buttery. I can imagine one keeping a mine worker full indeed. If you've never had this regional favorite, you need to at least try one. Plan for one per person and half for most children. Most delicious when served with at least a little gravy, or if you're like me....a lot of gravy.
