Klay Pittman is a world class martial artist and there's no one in town who can teach as much or as well as him. His program is thoughtful and well organized.

I recommend the academy to all who is looking for that change in their life and just want things better. Not many if any teach how important leadership is and the value of commentment. Mr Pittman teaches that and the great art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

I tend to be what they call a “helicopter mom.” I’m sure some of first time mothers feel or felt the same at one time. I wanted to keep my son safe and protect him from everything, until I found Pittman Jiu Jitsu Academy at the art festival. After that initial meeting, I started breaking out of my comfort zone. I did as we all do at one point and went online and read the reviews for something new, be it a restaurant or a school or an academy. Of course, most people go online and only leave reviews when they are unhappy or want everyone to know how their experience was. One review stuck with me about Professor Pittman not watching his language in front of the smaller kids. Now as members of the Academy for a few months, I have not heard any of the Pittman staff say anything unprofessional. I worried because he is still young at 3 years old and felt that he was not going to learn anything or listen in class. I see him from time to time playing with his feet in class and I feel he is not paying attention, but when it’s time to get to work I see him doing what he has learned, and I can see him demonstrating his confidence as he goes to school. He walks like a leader and it really shows that he is not only learning to defend himself in the right way and achieving knowledge of how to respond to any situation but is also gaining confidence in every way. Being an only child, I would see him play by himself, but learning and practicing at the Academy with different training partners is helping him reach out to other children at daycare and expand his comfort zone with other children.

I been training at pittmans academy for almost 2 years now. June 10th will mark 2 years with this school. At first I got frustrated because I wanted to learn everything. It don't work that way. In order to learn is to go everyday. But from the instructor to the students everyone is professional. Jiujitsu isn't about what color your belt is. It's about how you think of your self. can you dedicate your self to going everyday when you can. And can you also dedicate your self out side of martial arts either it be your job your wife your kids your religion. Jiujitsu is a way of life. Pittmansjiujitsu is a great place to find your self. You have to crawl before you can walk.

I am so happy I was led to Pittmans Academy! I have learned so much and it has changed my life in a way that I have never learned from anyone ever before! I wish I would have known about this wonderful academy many years ago! I believe my life would have been drastically different in a more confident and positive way! These skills you don't learn anywhere else! You learn and change and grow in ways that mature your mind,body, soul and spirit!!! Growth happens in many amazing ways! I highly recommend that everyone come and join and give yourself the gift of a lifetime!

Prof. Pittman and his academy are the absolute best! They are the real deal. They teach martial arts that the whole family can enjoy. Kids or adults. If you are interested in learning and growing as a person both on and off the mat, then you owe it to yourself to come check it out. You'll love it!

One day, when Helio Gracie was 16 years old, a student showed up for class when Carlos was not around. Helio, who had memorized all the techniques from watching his brothers teach, offered to start the class. When the class was over, Carlos showed up and apologized for his delay. The student asked for Helio to continue being his instructor, Helio Gracie then gradually developed Gracie Jiu Jitsu as an adaptation from Judo as he was unable to do many Judo moves.[7]

When Maeda left Japan, judo was still often referred to as "Kano Jiu-Jitsu",[9] or, even more generically, simply as "Jiu-Jitsu."[10][11] Higashi, the co-author of "Kano Jiu-Jitsu"[9] wrote in the foreword:

   "Some confusion has arisen over the employment of the term 'jiudo'. To make the matter clear I will state that jiudo is the term selected by Professor Kano as describing his system more accurately than jiu-jitsu does. Professor Kano is one of the leading educators of Japan, and it is natural that he should cast about for the technical word that would most accurately describe his system. But the Japanese people generally still cling to the more popular nomenclature and call it jiu-jitsu."[9

Outside Japan, however, this distinction was noted even less. Thus, when Maeda and Satake arrived in Brazil in 1914, every newspaper announced "jiu-jitsu" despite both men being Kodokan judoka.[5]

The Japanese government itself did not officially mandate until 1925 that the correct name for the martial art taught in the Japanese public schools should be "judo" rather than "jujutsu".[12] In Brazil, the art is still called "Jiu-Jitsu". When the Gracies went to the United States to spread their art, they used the terms "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" and "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" to differentiate from the already present styles using similar-sounding names. "Jiu-jitsu" is an older romanization that was the original spelling of the art in the West, and it is still in common use, whereas the modern Hepburn romanization is "jūjutsu."

If I could leave no stars I would! Stay away far far away! From the minute you walk in you'll notice a distinct douche bag vibe coming from the instructors. You'll notice they think very very highly of themselves and they expect the students to bow down to them. It's CREEPY!!! Also they will intimidate you to sign a contract and give them your money! That's what they are really after, do yourself a favor stay away.

Just to be clear, the professor does not relate to academic degrees. It is a title given when you reach a third degree master black belt. Please do research before much accusations.

I was interested in taking a self-defense class this summer before leaving for college. I found Pittman's and during my introductory lesson was blown away as to how eager the instructors were to teach and show their love for Jiu-Jitsu. The atmosphere was very welcoming and everyone who trains is willing to help beginners along the way. Professor Pittman and his excellent team of Instructors will always be a phone call away for me. They are a phenomenal group of people who are dedicated to making the world better. I would recommend them to anyone who asks, beginner or expert.

I have had my pro mma card for 5 yrs now. I moved to Lubbock after I married my wife. I went down town to check this place out and oh boy was it a let down. Pushy sales, and they wanted my name and number fast. I told this fruit cake no thank I would just like to kick back and watch. I showed this guy my pro card just to let him know that I'm not a noob to rolling. Head gave me a cute smile and told me that does not matter. Seeing I could have made an error in our convo I told him I was not trying to be rude and I was simple reassuring him that I know a lot more then your avg walk in. Still he told my card means nothing. I smiled and walked out. Do not waste your time and money. Oh and klaus Pittman does not have a Ph.d so how is a professor?

I came to tour this place and try it out and see if I was interested and everyone was very friendly and welcoming at first. After my first free lesson, it went down hill from there.

I couldn't even speak or even react to what the instructor was telling me, all i remembered was "payments, payments payments and money". Since i am a college student, they try tricking you by saying you'll save money by down paying a certain amount and what not, but then you'll still end up paying a big amount.

What i found appalling was how he answered me when I told him i had to ask my parents first since they are my financial providers, and he had the audacity to lecture me that I should be independent and be my own person.

From there, he lost me out the window, there is no way in hell am I taking crap from someone who doesn't even know me to be lecturing me like that.

For those that are in the academy and enjoy it, that's wonderful, it seems like a great place to learn and everything but they need to change their "sales" tactic if they want to even try recruiting new students.

They seem to like to address themselves as "professors". I wanted to burst out loud laughing when one of the instructors only had a master's degree, yet called himself a professor. Also, Mr. Pittman does NOT have any related degrees to even be addressed as a professor. In the United States, the title of a professor is given ONLY to PhD degrees who have earned a permanent position at a University.

This place has changed my life in an all positive kind of way. I have never found a more supportive and loving place where I am constantly challenged to be a better person in every way. Not only am I receiving the best martial arts instruction available, but I am surrounded by a team of people who care about my training, my health, my school, my relationship with God, and every other part of my life.

I've trained here for the past several years along with my wife and kids. It's funny that everyone that has negative comments like the "money" or "creepy" has not rated any other business. It's obvious that they are simply from other schools bad mouthing Pittman's. Ask yourself this "When you go to a resturant, do they charge you or is it free?" This is a business and they have to charge but in my opinion, you get a lot more than you pay for. They have over 18 BJJ classes a week....I don't know of any other school that has that many classes in a month!

You do get 1 free month training, this is true, but there is a catch. There is always a catch. Sad if you wanna train in the martial arts. There should be no catch. Plus, you are given your belt rank instead of earning it based on how long you have been training. Not the proper way in my opinion to actually earning your rank.

I trained with Klay very briefly back in '99 or 2000, before leaving Lubbock. Anyone I have trained with since, be it in Austin or Dallas, immediately recognizes the name and is genuinely impressed. I regret not taking full advantage of the opportunity to train there longer, but then, I was a lazy hippie college student.



It's interesting reading the reviews. Anything negative seems to be based entirely on sales tactics. And, while I don't remember that being an issue for me (I was very direct about only wanting two month's training for self-defense rather than competition), I have yet to meet one martial arts instructor (or personal trainer, for that matter) who doesn't come off as a bit pushy, as aggression is the basis of their livelihood, their hobby, and, generally, their state of existence.



To anyone else considering training there, treat your initial visit like shopping for a used car. i.e. Just be clear you're there for a test drive, and you're not signing anything without knowing what you're getting. But, I think you'll quickly find that what you're getting is well worth it.

my name is brandon mullins and i am a black belt from Klay pittman. i trained at pittman's academy of martial arts for seven years before moving away from lubbock. i am an active competitor and have won the ibjjf NO GI WORLDS 2x (2010,2011,rooster weight) and the ibjjf NO GI PAN AMS (2009 pluma weight) at adult black belt. i have also won the US open at brown and black belt (2006,2010) and i am a multiple time NAGA and grapplers quest champion in the ADV division. professor pittman's instruction and facility is world class. i was able to develop a solid base in both fundamental and advanced brazilian jiu jitsu because of his expert teachings and the unique learning environment that he has created at his academy. if you are interested in learning bjj and you live in the west texas area then there is no other choice then pittmans academy of martial arts,its simple the best facility around. with guest instructors like carlos and rigan machado,royce gracie and vinicious "draculino",this is a win-win environment.
