The Los Altos Police Department preserves human lives and property, protects public peace and the rights of citizens, prevents crime and disorder, and enforces local, state and federal laws. It has a code enforcement unit that addresses public health and safety issues, including regulations related to garbage, removal of vegetation, zoning, dangerous buildings, housing and inoperable vehicles on private property. The department operates a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, which specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations. In addition, it has a K-9 unit that handles issues related to drug intervention, tracking, and searches for persons, property and evidence. The Los Altos Police Department is located in Los Altos, Calif.
