When my wife's car wouldn't start I took the battery to an auto parts store to check it and it was going bad, so I bought a new one. But when I installed it I couldn't get the cable clamps on tight, so I called a tow truck to either fix the "simple" job I had started or tow the car to a shop. The tow mechanic connected the cables, but when he turned the ignition he only got a click. After twenty or thirty tries the starter began to work and he got the engine started, and with the engine still running I drove the car to the shop thinking I would need to replace the starter.
Jim saw me right away and although he had other customers coming in and other work in progress he kept coming back to work on my car. He saw that the cable clamps still were not fully tight and went to work on them. The first thing I want from a mechanic is good diagnostics. Jim ignored the irregularities of the attachment hardware and made adjustment to get the fittings tight, not just saying that this was the best that the equipment could do. The second thing I want from a mechanic is high standards. When the car then started easily he told me that the difficult starting that had happened before could have been caused by poor cable connection and that the starter might not need to be replaced. The third thing I want is to not be sold unnecessary repairs. I said I would go inside with him to settle up and he said, "We're good." I couldn't believe it. I handed him a twenty from my wallet but as I reached for another he repeated, "We're good." He wouldn't take more. This goes beyond the fourth thing I want, fair treatment. Jim did all this while wearing a clean uniform and wearing rubber gloves to handle my car.
If you want good diagnostics, high standards, honesty, and fair treatment, see Jim.
