vinyl tile installation

We hired this installer. We have a bathroom that had 8" ceramic tile floors and wanted to replace it with vinyl tile. This person looked at the project and quoted a price to remove the old tile and install the new. Upon arrival to install he said it would not be necessary to take up the old tiles. He said the new tiles would go over the old tile "no problem." We got out of the way and let he and his helper go to work. This did include taking up the old toilet which was understood initially. Part way through the process, the installer (Victor) said a few tiles were not sticking well and he needed some tile adhesive which we promptly went to the store to get. When he was finally finished the job he said not to walk on the floor for a couple of days, he gathered up what tools he had brought, collected his money and left. As he left he said to get some caulking and some tile grout and he would be back to do this. We looked into the room and we could see some gaps and places that needed caulking. Within a few hours we noticed the yellow tile adhesive bubbling up between the tiles and also noted some tiles were nicely butted up to each others and others had big gaps but as instructed we did not walk on the floor. Instead, we set about trying to remove the glue that must have come off of their shoes on to the adjacent wood floors. Two days later we entered the rooms and for the first time got a good look at the workmanship. We realize there is a skill to installing anything with an adhesive backing and clearly this person had either never done this type of installation before or is not good at it . A picture is worth a thousand words and we hope to post some pictures in the near future. The top of the new tiles were covered with an abundance of dried adhesive. Some of the seams look like dirty cracks while others are hardly noticeable. In the doorway area between the bedroom and the master bath, the full pieces of tile did not reach all of the wall to the wall and entry so he cut one inch strips without matching the pattern of the closest tile and stuck it down like an after thought. There is one tile in the middle of the floor that has a pointed bump coming through the top of the tile. Long story short, this floor is a mess and it is certainly not a professional installation. So far with the cost of the material and the $350 paid to the guy for installation, we have around $600 invested in this floor. There is dry, sticky, adhesive along most of the seams, as well as all over the tops of all of the tiles. After several days of being on hands and knees trying to clean this floor ourselves we called this man and he said he had other jobs and was busy. He has never returned as he said he would. Therefore, we consulted a couple of well recommended installers for their advice and were told to "continue to try to clean the adhesive off and live with the floor as it is" or take up the entire vinyl tile and the ceramic tile it is stuck to and replace with new tile as it should have been installed initially. The estimates to redo this job came in between $1100 and $1350 just for labor and installation of new tile. This does not cover the cost of new tile. This now puts us at nearly $2000 for replacing tile in a 10 feet by 7 feet area! In other words about $30 a square foot. Due to the fact that we were told not to walk on the tile, we really did not get a chance to see the poor quality of this installation or we would have not paid and instead addressed these issues to the installer while he was here. He was paid and is gone and would anyone really want the person who didn't do the job right the first time return and try to correct it? Not us. We own up to the fact that we should not have been impressed by a fancy business card and we should have looked closer to see this business is not a member of BBB or board of cont...
