I was in Las Vegas for the SEMA show and called Dr Louk at 2am. He answered his own phone and was at my Bellagio room 30 minutes later. He numbed up my foot and took a joint fluid sample, then injected the joint with betamethasone acetate. I remember the medicine because he gave me the vial to show my Podiatrist in Chicago. I usually travel with colchicine pills, but forgot them this trip. Dr Louk gave me 15 free colchicine pills from his black bag and told me I won’t need them because the injection almost always works. He cautioned that if I drink alcohol with the colchicine I will have diarrhea, my hair will fall out, and I probably will die from a bleeding stomach. The next morning Dr Louk called to tell me that he used his special microscope at his office, just for gout, and that he did see uric acid crystals in my joint fluid. He sent a report to my Internist, who has always suspected gout but was never able to get a good joint fluid draw. Dr Louk was easy to talk to and didn’t seem rushed at all. I told him about my knee on the other leg and he twisted and pulled on it and said he was no expert, but would suspect an old ACL rupture. He gave me the number of an orthopeadist in Oak Lawn that stores his motorcycle in Dr Louk’s warehouse during the winter. Small world.

I flew into Vegas when my mother was admitted to the ICU. I cried when I saw her feet. They looked like claws. The nails were partially torn and the cuticles were bleeding. I don't know how she even walked. The nurses had taped booties on her feet because they were getting clawed overtime they walked by her bed. They said the Doctor had requested a Podiatry consult, but after 3 days of waiting the Podiatrist called back and said "I don't trim toenails." I searched the web and found Dr Louk. He carefully trimmed the horrible nails, and Mom didn't even wake up during the treatment. I thought his $230 bill was a little steep. Then I got the hospital bill for the booties. $670 for 2 lumps of sponge and some velcro straps. I was so relieved when Dr Louk offered to check on Mom's feet when she was transferred to Rehab and later to an assisted living facility. I never want to see my mother in this condition again.
