I was out with the kids when they expressed the need to get haircuts. My son is 6 and had long hair, and my daughter is 3. We walked in to the salon inside the Walmart on I-35 S, near Baseline, and I put their names on the list. The lone hair dresser was working on one lady and had another waiting so we sat. I had a little shopping to do so I asked the stylist how long she thought it would be. She said 30 minutes. So the kids and I went out to do the little shopping we were there to do. When we got back to the salon, the lone stylist was pricing product. I felt sorry for her. working by herself and, it appeared, there was a lot to do besides appointments and walk ins. She did not seem to be in a good mood at all, which I didn't blame her. Eventually she finished with the pricing and got Leel in the chair. I told her he wanted a buzz cut, but any short style she wanted to do was fine. I told her to be creative if she wanted to be. She didn't want to be. As a matter of fact, she gave Leel the buzzing of his life. Twice he yelled out in pain. The second time she acknowledged him and apologized. Still, his little head was covered in red marks and scratches by the time she was done. Only one scratch was deep enough to draw a little blood, but I didn't find it until we got home (after it had scabbed over). Needless to say I was a little upset. I mean it wasn't horrible, just unnecessarily rough. Leel could take it, but it was uncalled for to my mind. Runa was next. I told her to give her a pixie cut like Halle Berry. She did a beautiful job on her. A truly great cut. By the time Runa was done, another stylist had shown up. The stylist who cut their hair was very, very fast (guess she was in a hurry for her day to end), so this all didn't take very long. And I'm a slow burn as well. So when they were done and I went to pay, I asked the new lady who was checking me out if there was a discount for the rough treatment Leel had gotten. Even though I was pretty tightly wound by then, I did not yell or even raise my voice, but made sure I was understood by both ladies. The original stylist then had a meltdown. I know she was having a bad day, but suddenly she is accusing me of having come in with an agenda from the start. That I was racist, out to get her, and all sorts of other things. The one checking me out said Leel looked fine and that some scratching happens when getting a buzz cut. Fine. I didn't like it, but I was obviously not going to be listened to. Even when I tried to compliment the stylist on Runa's great haircut, it didn't stop the loud rant in progress. I was then taken aback again when I got the total. They charged me for shampoo, cut & style. All the kids got were cuts. No shampoo and no style. I objected to having to pay full price when they didn't get everything. I was told I should have asked for the shampoo and style if I wanted it. I didn't realize I had the option. No one told me and I had no previous experience to draw from. Again I realized it was an argument I could not win. They did offer to shampoo the kids, but I didn't want to risk more bad temper being taken out on them so declined. I was beyond exasperated. I also usually tip stylists really well. Back when we first came in and I was feeling sorry for the lone stylist, I had planned on tipping her well to try and cheer her up. Needless to say, no tip. Especially after paying so much for so little work, but with so much grief. Yeah, I'll never go in there again. I don't care if a stylist is cheery as long as they do their jobs well. If she had simply apologized, whether she believed she had done anything wrong or not, I would have been satisfied and she would have gotten at least a small tip. The yelling and accusations of racism and being out to get her not only made no sense, but were uncalled for.
