Sonya Ahmed, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in treating sports-related foot and ankle injuries.She is an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and chief of the Foot and Ankle Division at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Ahmed has served as a consultant physician for the Chargers and was also selected as chief medical officer of the 2016 Youth Olympic Games by the United States Olympic Committee.Dr. Ahmed completed her fellowship training at the prestigious Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Alabama. During her fellowship, she received additional training in foot and ankle reconstruction at the University of Alabama. She completed her orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch and earned her medical degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School. She is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery.Dr. Ahmeds decision to become an orthopedic surgeon came from her lifelong love of athletics and her understanding of the impact of injury and recovery. As an American of Egyptian heritage, Dr. Ahmed joined the Egyptian National Gymnastics Team at age 16. She later became the first female pole vaulter at her medical school. While in medical school, she achieved many athletic honors including Mid-Continent Conference Female Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year for two consecutive years.
