Sierra Washington, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist who provides labor and delivery care at UC San Diego Health. As an on-call physician, Dr. Washington attends to patients admitted to the hospital during active labor, and those who experience complications during delivery. She aims to provide a safe and pleasant birthing experience for parents and their newborns within Jacobs Medical Centers state-of-the-art obstetrical environment.At UC San Diego School of Medicine, she is an associate professor in the Department of Reproductive Medicine, where she instructs OB/GYN residents in the areas of contraception and abortion. She also teaches and supervises residents in the inpatient setting.In addition to her care at UC San Diego Health, Dr. Washington serves as medical director and chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, which provides medical services for 18 locations in the region, including San Diego County, Riverside County and Imperial Valley County. As medical director and chief medical officer, Dr. Washington provides clinical oversight and direction, leads new clinical initiatives, and oversees the organizations quality and research programs.Dr. Washington has published numerous articles and her work has appeared in International Journal of Gynecology Obstetrics and Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, among others. She has spoken regionally, nationally and internationally on a range of topics, including HIV and pregnancy and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Washingtons experience also includes working as a physician in sub-Saharan Africa, where she helped fight the HIV epidemic. She has worked for many years at the intersection of HIV and reproductive health in countries such as Zambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.Dr. Washington completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the UCSF, where she also served as chief resident. She earned her doctoral degree from Harvard Medical School and holds a Master of Science in Public Health from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG).Outside of work Dr. Washington enjoys music and dancing.
