Maria C. Savoia, MD, is a board-certified infectious disease specialist. She cares for patients with infections caused by germs such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. She also provides counsel and preventive medicine services for healthy people who plan to travel. Dr. Savoia believes that the relationship between the physician and patient should be a partnership, and works closely with each patient to restore their health.As dean of medical education at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Savoia has programmatic responsibility for admissions, financial aid, diversity and community partnerships, student affairs, undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education, and alumni relations.Dr. Savoia is chair-elect of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), a nonprofit organization that helps standardize the residency selection process, and ensure the process is fair, reliable and transparent.Dr. Savoia served as co-director of the medicine core clerkship and as assistant chief, acting chief of medicine at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and vice chair of the Department of Medicine until she joined the deans office as associate dean for curriculum and student affairs in 1990. Dr. Savoia received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency training in internal medicine and fellowship training in infectious diseases at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
