For visitors to Volcano National Park, or staying in the area; this is the closest Clinic at approx. 16 m. Located on the "old road" into Keaau, its charming and rustic setting is very "old hawaii". However, the quality of staff, physicians and care is modern and top flight!. Unfortunately, I'd had to visit a few times in as many years twice for myself, once driving a neighbor. The physician is formerly of the prestigious Straub Hospital in Honolulu, having moved to "Quasi-retirement" of the Big Island, while practicing in a small rural clinic setting for the peace and slower pace of it. The Triage Nurse is very experienced, the computer systems current and up to date, the care excellent from start to finish. It is a walk in rural health resource, so should you need a Cat Scan, Xrays, further testing, you may need the E.R. in HIlo. ON the other hand if you have fallen ill on your vacation, had an injury, this is a wonderful resource. I am very grateful they are available; so thorough and convenient -compared to waiting hours in an ER.

I was hoping that they were going to help my nephew that had gashed his hand open and needed a few stitches, but what happened was a quibble over his insurance not being excepted. I understand that they must be paid and I would have paid cash if they had of just treated him, but I said screw it and just drove him to Hilo and he was treated in short order.

Bedside manner should start at the receptionist.

I had the misfortune of getting quite ill while spending about 1 month in Hawaii and there are not a lot of options if you're staying in Volcano Village. This particular clinic is situated in what will strike mainlanders as a fairly rustic setting, so if you’re expecting a flashy new building, don’t! If you’re familiar with what lots of residences look like here in Paradise, expect that. Either way, what matters is the quality of care, and I have rarely encountered such a kind, caring, and effective staff. The RN, Charlize, who did intake was more complete and compassionate than those who provide similar care at my mainland HMO, and Dr. Gillespie was wonderful: patient, kind, accommodating, informative, and helpful. In fact, even the receptionist was kind and concerned both when I phoned ahead and in person. As one who has an insurance plan that does not “travel” well, I paid $125 for a visit that was worth every penny. Within 2 hours—which also included the 20-mile round-trip drive—I had been seen, prescribed the right antibiotic, I’d picked up the prescription at a Longs-CVS a few blocks away, and I was feeling much better the very next day. I had read scathing reviews on-line of some of the urgent-care options on the Island and, in the end, I found the right medicine at a place where I least expected it. All I can say is thank you!
