The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, located in Kansas City, Mo., is an interstate agency of Missouri and Kansas. The ATA has a seven-county jurisdiction comprising the counties of Cass, Clay, Jackson, and Platte, Mo; and Johnson, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte, Kan. A board of commissioners governs the affairs of the authority. The ATA s metro division is responsible for the daily public transportation to more than 50,000 passengers. The division operates over 70 bus routes that provide nearly 8 million miles of scheduled transit service per year. Approximately one-fifth of its income is derived from operations, mostly from passenger revenue. Smaller amounts are obtained from stadium express operations and bus advertising. Approximately two-thirds of the operating cost is derived from local governmental subsidies. The federal government also provides the operating funds, receiving operating and capital assistance from the Federal Transit Administration.
