Saturday, May 1, 2015 1:05 PM. I live up the hill from the Johnston Asphalt Company. From time to time the fumes are overwhelming and I can't open my windows or work outdoors. The odor is smutty and acrid. I have respiratory problems and maybe this bothers me more than it does others.. However, I remember that a few years ago neighbors on the North Providence side complained. Things seemed to be better for a couple of years but are getting worse now. So, whatever was done a few years ago to eliminate the fumes I wish could be done again.
